A Durham couple riding as Lyft passengers were killed in a crash in Detroit, and the driver now faces serious felony charges. What Happened in Detroit
The crash was reported around 10:15 a.m. on a Sunday in late February 2026, in the 6000 block of Rosa Parks Boulevard on Detroit’s west side. Police found the vehicle upright against a warehouse loading dock door. Two passengers were trapped inside and pronounced dead at the scene.
The victims were Andre Boynton, 60, and Carla Boynton, 57, both of Durham. The driver, a 40-year-old man from Virginia, was working for Lyft at the time. He was injured and taken for treatment while in police custody.
The Charges the Driver Faces
Prosecutors allege the driver was speeding and driving recklessly when he lost control. He was charged with two counts of second-degree murder, reckless driving causing death, and leaving the scene of an at-fault accident causing death. He is also accused of running from the crash site. Bond was set at $500,000.
